My Sims 3 Game Won't Open On Mac
To do this hold down CMD and press Return when the main game window launches. In the highly likely event of your game freezing/hanging you can then click anywhere on the desktop and go to the Apple logo, top left, and select Force Quit. This will save you having to power off your Mac using the power switch (which can damage the HD). May 14, 2019 Open The Sims 3. Click on the (options) button at the bottom left of the screen or press F5 on your keyboard. On the Graphics tab (usually the one that opens by default), slide all the sliders under Graphics details to low. Click on the blue check mark at the bottom right to save your changes.

- edited December 2013I started out with a whole other issue and now I am having this one too. I tried Finder > Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3 but there are no files in there. Is there somewhere else to find the EA folder on a MAC? I installed the base game for the first time on my Mac, I have no mods or CC. The icon won't even open on the pop up bar. I click the Sims 3 located in my application folder and absolutely nothing happens.
- edited December 2013misskacey17 if you look in your applications, you should have a EA folder with the sims3 game. If its not there, I would guess it did not install?
I have a problem with my launcher too. Its a new problem i usually don't have. I can open my launcher, but when i want to log in to my launcher it shut down.
I play offline to avoid game problems, but now i need to upload a sim, and each time i try to log in to my launcher it just quit. I have tried to remove the icon from the dock, open it directly from the application, tried to replace it at the dock again, and nothing helps. It keep quitting as soon as i want to log in. But i can open the game and play as long as i don't log in.
Any good ideas or work around to how to upload a sim around the launcher?
Thank you in advance! - edited December 2013I'm actually having the same issue. But I originally figured it might just have been my computer, due to issues I have had with it in the past two weeks. Usually when I shut down my computer and reboot it, it repairs itself, yet this time is it not the case.
On Friday night, I was able to open my game successfully. On Saturday morning, I wasn't able to open the program.
I have the quite a lot of expansion packs. I have World Adventures, Late Night, Generations, Ambitions, Supernatural, Pets, and Seasons. I haven't install anything before attempting to launch the Sims 3.
All it does is show it is running with the Sims 3 icon. (Usually, it is the Seasons icon.) - edited March 2014Have your computer search for your Sims 3 folder. If it installed correctly you should find the actual game files in your Applications folder and the stored data (your games, CC, downloads) in your Documents folder under Electronic Arts.Second Star to the Right and Straight on 'til Morning.
- edited March 2014The same thing is happening to me. I really want to play it. I gave it some time thinking that I was playing it too much. But sadly. it didn't help now all of a sudden 'Unknown Error Occurred' popped up onto my screen. I play on MacBook Pro. I think I broke the Sims 3. :?
- edited March 2014I don't know if anyone else is still having this problem, but I might have a solution.
This just happened to me frequently, and with some web searching and troubleshooting I got my solution.
Here are the steps, they are in Mac format so no worries.
You should probably write down what your original set screen resolution is before you change it!
1. Open Finder
2. Locate your Sims 3 Folder (Found through Documents->Electronic Arts->The Sims3)
3. Open up The Sims3 folder
4. Double click on the file named, 'Options.ini'
5. If/when a box pops saying, 'No application to open with' select, 'Choose An Application' and find Text Edit.
6. Open 'Options.ini' with Text Edit
7. Scroll down until you find the line 'Resolution'
8. Click on the apple in the top left corner
9. Select, 'About This Mac'
10. Click 'More Info'
11. There is a header at the top of the box that pops up. It has 4 options, 'Overview', 'Displays', 'Storage', and 'Memory'
12. Click on 'Displays'
13. You should see a picture of a mac, then some words underneath saying something like,
Built-In Display
#-inch (#x#)
Intel HD Graphics ## ## MB graphics
*If its not word for word, its okay. The #'s represent numbers.
14. The numbers right after the display inches (#-inch) which are, in the example, (#x#) are what you want. For example, on mine it says, (1280 x 800). Copy and paste those numbers.
15. Go back to the 'Options.ini' in Text Edit.
16. Paste what you just copied on that line, but take out the X and the parentheses. LEAVE THE 0 AT THE END!! IF YOU TAKE IT OUT YOUR GAME WILL NOT START UP! (For example, after pasting, it should read/look something similar to the following,
resolution = 1280 800 0. The numbers obviously won't be the same unless you have the same mac as I do.
17. Save and quit.
18. Open up your launcher to see if it worked.
19. A side note, it DOES make your game fit your whole screen. If you don't want that, simply change it back to what it was before. Again, you should probably write down what it was before you change it! Other than that, it doesn't change much.

1. Open your Finder.
2. Go to Applications.
3. Go to The Sims 3 folder. On the game icon, right click and open Show Package Contents.
4. Click on Contents, then you will see a file called Info.plist. Open it.
Find this line:
<string>c:Program Files/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Game/Bin/S3Launcher.exe</string>
And replace with:
<string>c:Program Files/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Game/Bin/TS3.exe</string>
Save and quit, and then you can play without the launcher.
If you want the launcher back, which still hasn't worked for me, do the exact opposite of the above.

I have the same problem as the OP, the icon for the EP shows up and then disappears without opening the launcher. I could bypass the launcher, but I really want to just install and patch, and then reinstall some of my Store content, and bypassing the launcher seems to be a bit more convoluted in Mavericks than it was in Snow Leopard..
I was up to Generations installing the game on my new-to-me 2013 iMac when I suddenly had this problem. I hadn't played (other than opening the game and playing a few Sim days to see whether it worked, and quit without saving after every EP install) and I haven't installed any mods or custom content yet.
I'm now reinstalling after uninstalling, cleaning the Library folders, putting back the transgaming folders for Medieval (LOL!! Got a bit over-zealous there!) and I hope it will work this time. The pile of disks to reinstall is rather daunting..
On the subject of bypassing the launcher: Snow Leopard I had an alias to 'Contents' that I kept on my desktop. I could use that to swap the info.plist from TS3W to the Launcher one without having to go to Applications and 'show contents', etc.
Apparently in Mavericks I'm not allowed to make an alias of the 'Contents' folder that is inside the app? I do have a 'make alias' option for stuff that is lower in the path, but not for Contents itself?
